Permeability to water vapor
Old buildings (made of stone, earth, etc.) are often composed of massive walls that are in direct contact with the ground without a capillary barrier. Additionally, the materials used in these buildings have a high water absorption capacity.
These specific features of old walls promote the rise of water by capillarity.
For old walls, it is therefore necessary to ensure a continuous permeability of water vapor between the exterior and the interior.
The choice of mortar composition should allow for the proper evacuation of moisture from the wall, ensuring breathability.
