Rehabilitation of the Ramparts - Fort Brescou
Overview
Restoration of Fort Brescou
A bit of History
The Fort de Brescou is located on the island of Brescou, on an ancient volcano off the coast of Cap d'Agde. It was built in 1586 by the Viscount of Joyeuse who seized the island to construct the first fort. Large enough to house a company of about sixty men, it served as a base for two frigates that had control over the sea, under the command of Sieur Gaspard Dot, also known as 'Barberoussette'. Isolated, Fort Brescou served as a state prison from the 18th century until the mid-19th century. The site is now listed on the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments.
Project
Due to its age, the Mediterranean climate, and the presence of seawater, the fort had deteriorated. The rocks and walls had collapsed, rendering it unsafe for tourists to visit.

Application
PROMPT natural cement played a central role in these restoration works, especially in areas submerged or in contact with water.
IT WAS USED IN FOUR DIFFRENT WAYS
- Immersed concrete for repositioning the first courses of the rampart wall
- Mortar for anchoring and leveling stones in cavities or for the upper courses subjected to waves
- Grout to fill all voids in the masonry at the base of the rampart
- Lime/PROMPT mortar for strengthening the masonry at the base of the rampart
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION
Thanks to its quick setting, durability, and resistance in a marine environment, PROMPT natural cement enabled the completion of work in an area heavily influenced by the sea.
